Essay on Morality and Relgion - Irish Murdoch - 1704 Words

Iris Murdoch-â€Å"Morality and Religion†: Notes pg. 733, para 1: Murdoch’s purpose is to question the relationship of morality to religion, and look at their differences as well as the definition of religion. -She claims this essay is moral philosophy and feels she must clarify whether her philosophy is religious or not. -She discusses how some believe religion really must be â€Å"breathed in† during childhood (taught to children by their parents); otherwise, adults may feel they are just faking it—but, Murdoch notes, those who are religious when younger will have a hard time giving it up as adults. pg. 733, para 2: Virtue (doing right) is the most obvious connection between morality and religion. -Seeking virtue has lost popularity, and†¦show more content†¦-But Murdoch admits that religious people experience a heightened consciousness, which resonates with literary critic Matthew Arnold’s claim that religion is â€Å"morality touched by emotion.† -Murdoch explains the great intensity and assuredness that religion provides: it is deep, holy, absolute, engages one’s imagination, and engages the whole person at every moment of his/her life, and every moment matters. -Murdoch concludes that a high level of morality without religion doesn’t have any foundation. -With religion, Christians have points of reference to give their morality foundation, like the image of Christ, and Murdoch suggests that Christians adjust their attitudes to resonate with the image of Christ in order to make their beliefs true. [So these images Christians create become for them the truth even though they’re man made.] -Since images of Christ change over time, Christianity is a continuous adjustment to its images throughout history. [suggesting a perpetuation of a fantasy or that religion changes as historical periods change] pg. 737, para 5: Murdoch uses the example of a simple Welsh traveling pastor’s (Francis Kilvert’s) journal entries to demonstrate how religious reverence can make someone sound comfortably dumb, naà ¯ve, simple, humble. Kilvert is so secure in his faith that he is like a child. pg. 738, para 5 (con’t): Wittgenstein (Murdoch’s teacher) described why believers like

Winesburg Free Essays

The word grotesque is an oxymoron in itself. It means beautiful ugly. How a person can have both of these adjectives is the theme of Winesburg, Ohio written by Sherwood Anderson. We will write a custom essay sample on Winesburg or any similar topic only for you Order Now His characters become grotesque by holding onto one truth that make them distorted but unknowingly make them beautiful simultaneously. Anderson uses the motif of isolation on Seth Richmond, the Stranger and Tandy to develop their grotesqueness by making the characters’ isolation be the reason why they hold onto one truth causing their grotesqueness. On the other hand, the author ses biblical allusion to help clarify the truth Jesse Bentley lives by that causes his grotesqueness. Anderson uses the motif of isolation in order to enhance the grotesqueness of Seth Richmond, as the character’s self-imposed isolation causes his grotesqueness. Seth Richmond grows up with his mother, Virginia Richmond who does not know how to discipline him and a deceased father. Seth only stares at his mother apathetically when she scolds him that causes his mother to withdraw from her displeasure. Seth also only shows indifference in things other boys engage in and finds him different rom others, since he does not feel the same emotions people would usually feel. Hence, he holds onto the truth that he does not belong in the town and â€Å"he [wishes] that he himself [be] stirred by something† (133). Seth’s self-imposed isolation is what causes his grotesqueness. He thinks Just because he doesn’t have the same interest as the others and is not â€Å"stirred by something† makes him an outcast and unlike. When in fact, the people of Winesburg admire him because he comes off as a passionate and mature man. Nevertheless, Seth does not acknowledge the people’s houghts because he lives by his truth that he does not fit in Winesburg because he is indifferent about things the people our engaged in. For this reason, he is distorted and grotesque for believing one truth and not accepting the others’ truths. Later, Seth fancies a girl named Helen but with him imposing that he does not belong in the town and wants to leave, he soon drives away Helen and begins to think that the reason of her departure is because of his truth that he is an outcast. When in reality, Helen departs to avoid further sentiment because Seth tells her that it was their last ime they’ll see each other. Nonetheless, He continues to say, â€Å"when it comes to loving someone, it wont never be [him]. It’ll be†¦ someone who talks a lot – someone like that George Willard† (142). Seth continues to hold onto his truth and imposes that he needs be isolated further more from the town and needs to leave Winesburg. This eventually drives Helen away, but Seth believes it is because of his social skills. Hence, he becomes Jealous of George Willard and wants to be like him because he thinks that if he were George, Helen would not have left him. However, George Willard is not that social either, Seth assumes he is a social butterfly because he is a reporter but as a matter of fact he only listens well. Seth is grotesque because he believes in a truth that is not absolute. He believes that Helen left him because he is not as social as George Willard, when it is not the case. He is grotesque tor believing a truth about George Willard that is not true. The author also uses the motif of isolation to develop the grotesqueness of the Stranger and Tandy, as the characters’ isolation causes them to hold onto one truth aking them grotesque. Tandy Hard lives only with her father, Tom Hard because her mother is dead. Tom Hard spends most of his time being an atheist, wrecking the ideas and belief that God exists causing his daughter to be neglected. Not having anyone to nurture her and guide her, she becomes lost and continues to live without an identity, as implied by the author when he does not mention her real name until she the stranger names her Tandy. The stranger comes to Winesburg, Ohio in order to cure his alcohol addiction and addiction to an image of a lover. He claims that his over is named Tandy who has â€Å"the quality of being strong to be loved,† and the only reason he is not with her is because â€Å"she did not come in [his] time† (145). As a result of the stranger being lone and isolated for not having a lover, he holds onto the truth that his lover is named Tandy and she was not born in his time for the stranger does not find her yet. His reasoning makes him distorted because he continues to believe the truth that there is a Tandy that was not born at his time and not acknowledge the truth that there might not be any Tandy at all. In addition, his isolation also makes im grotesque because it makes him live by the truth that his lover is someone like Tandy and does not acknowledge the truth that there are other women out there that can be his potential lovers without necessarily having the same quality as Tandy. Nonetheless, the stranger imposes on the daughter that she should be Tandy and she should be strong and brave in order to beloved. Consequently, the daughter not having an identity starts to incline on the idea of Tandy. When her father calls her, she retaliates and says, â€Å"[she] want[s] to be called Tandy – Tandy Hard† (146). After he daughter’s statement demanding she wants to be called Tandy, it is implied that she will continue to live as Tandy. For that reason, the daughter is grotesque for not accepting that she can have her own truth to live by and not Just the truth of the stranger. However, the only reason she holds onto the stranger’s truth is because she does not acquire her own identity from the isolation and lack of nurture she gets from her father. Therefore, her isolation because of the lack of guidance from her father causes her to live by another person’s truth distorting her and making her rotesque. Anderson uses biblical allusion to help clear up the truth Jesse Bentley lives by creating his grotesqueness. Jesse Bentley inherits a colossal amount of land from his dead father and brothers. Before inheriting the land Jesse Bentley studied to be a minister, so returning home he is filled with religious thoughts. Hence, he begins to think that his farm is an empire of God and thinks that his lands need to be protected from â€Å"the hands of the Philistines† (73). As a man who studied to be a minister, it is understandable to return with the words of God. However, Jesse Bentley ssociating his life to the Bible and calling his neighbors Philistines is Just absurd and twisted. He lives by the truth that his life is parallel with Jesse’s life from the Bible, and even goes to the extent of calling his neighbors Philistines implying that they are enemies. For this reason, Jesse Bentley is grotesque because he lives by the truth that his neighbors are Philistines like in the Bible, causing his distortion and grotesqueness because his truth is not really true. As I said before, Jesse Bentley commences to equate his life to the Jesse of the Old Testament. The Jesse from the Old Testament is known as Christ’s key ancestor. As a result, Bentley prays to God that his wife conceives a son that can be named David in order for the lineage to start. However, his wife conceives a girl, Louise that gives birth to a son named David. Jesse Bentley then starts to get obsessive about contacting God through his grandson David. He thinks that through David they â€Å"will see the beauty and glory of God† (100), so he brings a sheep to sacrifice and uses David as a host in the forest. Jesse Bentley holds onto the truth that he can be a significant person like the Jesse from the Old Testament through his grandson. He strongly believes that his life is parallel to the life of the Bible’s Jesse when it is not the case. In addition, the fact that he still tries to equate his life into the bible when there’s a generation gap and the story that he is reenacting is Abraham and Isaac and not Jesse and David shows that he is so desperate to communicate with God and feel significant that it makes him distorted and grotesque. Furthermore, because Jesse Bentley is blinded by his want to be significant and the truth that he can communicate with God, he does not accept the ruth that God may not exist making him grotesque. In conclusion, the characters’ isolation leads them to live by one truth that enhances their grotesqueness. Additionally, the author uses biblical allusion to explain and clarify the truths the characters’ hold onto that makes them grotesque. In some way, the characters’ or in general people’s grotesqueness can be seen as beautiful. People’s faith in a certain truth can be considered beautiful and no matter how distorted it makes them seem, it’s the fact that people stand on their ground and fght for what they believe in, makes them admirable. Question: Discuss about theAccounting Software Packages used in Australiafor Small and Medium Organizations. Answer: Introduction The literature review depicts the usage of accounting software packages in Australia. In order to reduce the traditional operational issues small and medium organizations are adopting this product in wide scale (Tijani and Mohammed 2013). The review will demonstrate the history of accounting software packages, development and adaptation of accounting software. It will also describe the current market size along with the challenges faced by the organization. Finally the literature review will provide certain recommendations or suggestion for accounting software packages used in Australia. History of Accounting Software/Packages Used in Australia From the market analysis five small accounting software packages such as Intuit QuickBooks, MYOB, Reckon, Saasu and Xero are identified in Australia. The features are as follows: Factors MYOB QuickBooks Saasu Xero Quotes and affordability It does not have the feature of Quotes. It charges $29 to $65per month for the subscription The range of products allows the users of the software packages to build quotes. The monthly charge for this software package is $15 to $35. It has the ability to built quotes Charges $35 in the monthly basis. Does not have any quote feature. . It charges $19, $29, $64 in every month. Feedback Provides different formats for feedback. Statements The statement template is highly customized From the software gallery the users can directly access the statements. Gives opportunity to the users to customize the feedback. Provides print and email statements in customized manner. Security Highly secured Highly secured Medium Medium Accounting software is referred to as a computational program mostly used by small to medium organizations to manage their accounting system effectively and efficiently. It helps to store accounting records of transaction, employee details, payroll management system etc. traditionally, the accounting system was manually processed with the help of paper but gradually after the invention of computer and technologies revolutionary changes occurred in accounting system (Daneshgar, Low and Worasinchai 2013). Much affordable software is currently available in global competitive market and the changed mechanism has moved the concept of traditional programs. According to Sam et al. (2012), the changes are adopted due to certain features such the operational speed and faster management provoked the traditional accounting system to move into this platform. Mayasari (2015) stated that once a data stored in the database will not get deleted and it reduces the chances of occurrence of data redundancy. Important information can be fetched with the help of simple queries from a large storage in minutes (Gupta and Sawyer 2015). Whereas, Seethamraju (2015) argued that, though the system is efficient but there is high chance of data hijacking if appropriate security service is not used. Development and Adaptation on Software Packages During market assessment it has been found that, most of the widely used accounting software packages are used in Australia such as Intuit QuickBooks, MYOB, Reckon, Saasu and Xero. According to Bradshaw, Pulakanam and Cragg (2015) traditionally immediate access was not possible as the system was maintained by human resources. There was a huge chance of error occurrence. Again the traditional system also cannot assure that the stored data will never lose. Arcega et al. (2015) opined that if a system is managed by more than one then interruption might lead to vast confusion within the system itself. In order to avoid these issues advanced accounting packages are innovated. Wongsim and Hongsakon (2015) stated that, the computerized system enhanced the accuracy of measurements than the traditional process. In addition to this, Rajasa and Faturachman (2015) stated that, computerized accounting process has the characteristics of easy insertion, deletion and update whenever required. Different small to medium organizations with exceptional characteristics and faster processing and transactional requirements are adopting software packages such as MYOB, XERO. Henny et al. (2013) stated that based on the quality and features of organizations the accounting software are developed. Most of the government organizations and small to medium business organizations are adopting accounting software packages. Mohamed (2013) stated that, this system serves the general purposes of data management uniquely. Mayasari (2015) argued that the general purpose software cannot provide all the requirements of an organization whereas, accounting software meet all the requirements of the consumers and the organization too. Current Market Size During the period of market analysis it has been found that, most of the small to large business organizations have adopted the accounting software packages in order to avoid improper data management. Over the last ten years the market distribution of accounting software has completely changed in Australia Sam et al. (2012). Again, Bradshaw, Pulakanam and Cragg (2015) mentioned that Xero has about 67% of total market share, whereas saga has shared 35% of total market share. Since two to three years MYOB is focusing on the trades following the successful market IPO. MYOB also joined other locally located accounting software providers (Gupta and Sawyer 2015). Domestic as well as international investment is giving wide mode of advantages to the businesses and to the software development organizations also. Wongsim and Hongsakon (2015) argued that, in order to gain significant benefits from the marketplace many businesses are switching its platform from traditional to cloud based accounting system. In case of MYOB, it has been found that, more than 1 million of small to medium business are adopting the desktop based product invented by MYOB itself. In addition to this Arcega et al. (2015) opined that, the equity return percentage is 10% and 28 % respectively for MYOB and XERO. The Australian investors are continuously paying for further development of this accounting software. Financial circumstances are needed to be stronger for the potential development. Figure 1: Current market size of accounting software packages used in Australia (Source: Wongsim and Hongsakon 2015, pp- 1297) Identification of Leaders in the Market There are many accounting software used in the current market of Australia but based on the features of all the software packages the best one which might lead in the market is needed to be identified by the small to medium business enterprises (Tijani and Mohammed 2013). Different accounting software contain various characteristics for example payroll and accounting software is holds cash flow calculator, standard tools and it can manage huge number of users at a time without any kind of error. Wongsim and Hongsakon (2015) stated that, both the accounting software Xero and QuickBooks are cloud based but regardless of subscription planning Xero attracted vast number of users. Hongsakon (2015) stated considering the pricing aspects it has been detected that, for integrated payroll services Xero and QuickBooks both are similar. Competitive Advantages According to Rajasa and Faturachman (2015) over last two to three years cloud based accounting packages are widely used by different small to medium business organizations. These products are time saving, secured and also easily accessible by the employees and consumers as well. Again Seethamraju (2015) stated that, integration of these products along with the existing strategies will be much beneficial. The competitive advantages are defined during research and these are as follows: Reduction in the IT maintenance cost: Most of the cloud based product does not require adopting particular software (Wongsim and Hongsakon 2015). Thus it reduces the cost of regular update and backup. Availability: The stored banking and personnel information related to the employees can be easily accessed regardless of time and location (Daneshgar, Low and Worasinchai 2013). Even, it allows the users to view information from different digital devices. Feeds from banks: Information of credit cards can be easily downloaded to the bank accounts and according to Mohamed (2013) this is the most time saving operation. Easy sharing: Without using the USB keys information can be shared from one to other. Analysis of Current Gaps and Challenges Identified by the Consumers During analysis it has been found that the users are facing challenges while using the products these are as follows: Cost: According to Gupta and Sawyer (2015) the cost of counting software are reasonable but associated cost are very high during its utilization. For example RAM, speed of the processor, memory capacity require minimum standard. Difficulty: Non expert employees found difficulties while using it. Hongsakon (2015) opined that, improper accounting terms and business layouts are leading to massive loss. Time management: The feedback processes of accounting software take huge time. Lack of time management is leading to business failure. Maintenance: The maintenance does not include only software update the associated devices are also needed to maintain as well (Seethamraju 2015). However, due to lack of maintenance the organizations are facing competitive challenges. Conclusion and Recommendations From the overall discussion it can be concluded that, in order to avoid accounting based issues small to medium organizations are adopting accounting software packages in Australia and among them, most widely used software package in Xero. Due to the operational speed, production of automatic documents, appropriate management of information and accuracy these products are used. The literature has elaborated the history of accounting software including the development and adaptation procedure. The current market size and among them the leading brand is also identified. However, still certain issues are facing by those, who adopted the packages. Those challenges and there mitigation process are also recommended in this literature review. The recommendations are as follows: Advanced technology adaptation: In order to avoid the current challenges the small and medium business organizations should adopt more advanced and innovative technologies. Security: This is one of the major concerns; the organizations must keep the banking data and personnel information secured with the help of proper encryption key so that unauthorized users cannot access those data from the storage. Training to experts: enterprises must develop regular training programs for the employees so that they become familiar with the technologies very soon. Platform selection: Best cloud based platform is required to be selected to avoid data management and storage issues. Stages of Prenantal Development Essay Example

Stages of Prenantal Development Paper The intricate details of life begin with a single cell that develops into a full term fetus within approximately 38-40 weeks. The prenatal development stages outline the growth of the child and give a clearer picture of the development of the child in the womb. The course of this prenatal development is divided into three main periods:  germinal, embryonic, and fetal. The germinal/conception stage begins with conception, occurs within the first 2 weeks. This journey begins when the sperm and egg cell unite in one of the two fallopian tubes. The fertilized egg, known as a zygote, then moves toward the uterus, a journey that can take up to a week to complete. Cell division begins  and continues rapidly forming a blastocyst. Finally, the blastocyst arrives at the uterus and attached to the uterine wall, a process known as implantation. The conception stage is basically the preparatory and preliminary process of prenatal development that readies and prepares the body for the impending pregnancy. Once implantation has occur the the blastocyst is develops into an embryo. This second stage, the  embryonic period  occurs 2-8 weeks after conception. This is referred as the most important stage of prenatal devllopment as the foundational development of the embryo begins here. During this period, the rate of cell division increases, support systems for the cells form, and organs appear. The mass of cells attached to the uterine wall forms two layers and is now called the embryo. The  inner layer of cells of the embryo is the endoderm  which develops into digestive and respiratory systems. The middle layer known as the  mesoderm will develop into the circulatory system, bones, muscle, excretory system, and reproductive system. By the 8th week teeth and intestines start the form as well. From the 11th week onwards, the child is called a fetus, and this stage is the last of the prenatal development timeline. This stage culminates in the birth of the child. Development of the fetus continues rapidly throughout most of this period. The fetus develops hair, nails, vocal cords, genitals, hardened bones, and a functioning liver and kidneys. By about the 20th week fat starts accumulating under the skin, the heart starts pumping more amounts of blood each day, and the baby also starts experiencing hiccups. The rate of development continues slowly as other body systems such as ligaments, brain and eyes continue developing. Up to the 40th week, the main task is the formation of the lungs, as most other body parts and organs are ready. The child starts developing necessary immunities, and also starts fattening up to face the outer environment. By about the 39th week, the child will be ready to be born into this world. During pregnancy there are 3 trimesters. A trimester is referred to as a three months period. Most commonly, the first trimester is defined as from conception through week 14. The second trimester is from week 14 through week 28. And the third trimester is from week 28 through labor and deliver, which varies considerably but averages at week 40.

HAcker Attacks in Cyberspace essays

HAcker Attacks in Cyberspace essays As NATO troops, combat aircraft, and warships were preparing to attack during the Yugoslavian Conflict, NATO's computers were being attacked on a second front. NATO was prepared for this cyber attack. For the past few years, the U.S. military has been engaged in a quiet but seemingly never-ending series of e-mail skirmishes against an unseen enemy. These cyber battles are helping the military develop the tools it needs to defend itself and are proving to be better than any training exercises. For 78 days, from March to June 1999, the United States and its NATO allies engaged in a military operation to bring an end to Serbian atrocities in Kosovo. This operation was known as Operation Allied Force. Three days after the bombing began hackers from an unknown location began an attack to disrupt the e-mail communication of the NATO allied forces. "Pings" or a method of hacking was the most widely used method to disrupt the communications of NATO. In this method one computer repeatedly calls another computer and delivers a large volume of messages that are meant to overload a system. These "e-mail bombs" caused only a few hours of disconnected service. While the actual identities of these hackers are unknown, a likely suspect was a Belgrade based five-member hacker team called Crna Ruka, which means Black Hand. This group had hacked into Kosovo Information Centre and had been quoted by a Belgrade newspaper as saying "NATO is our next target." It is almost impossible to locate these hacker groups or even to convict them. Hackers can access almost any server from anywhere in the world and use that to disguise their locations. Cyber warfare skills are being honed by these cyber attacks. The increased amount of attacks gives experience to the military. The attacks on the NATO e-mail network were indeed a worthy note in the history of war. It was the one of the first times that computer hackers co ...

Challenges For The Contemporary Business Organizations - Samples

The present business scenario offers huge opportunities as well as various challenges for the contemporary business organizations. One of the key opportunities that are being present to the business organizations is the internet and online marketing facility (Eid & EI-Gohary, 2013). In the recent time, internet boom helps in changing the existing business scenario to the whole. More organizations are gearing up to increase their presence in the online market. In addition, numerous organizations originated which operates only based on internet. Thus, organizations having the opportunity to tap the internet facility will have huge potential in the future. Medicare is one such start up which will be primarily internet based and will provide online medical care service to their customers. In the current scenario, people have less time to go for any doctor appointment, compare the charges of various hospitals and doctor fees. Thus, Medicare will provide an online portal where people can c ompare the rates in various hospitals; can take online appointments for their chosen doctors (Solano-Lorente, Martinez-Caro & Cegarra-Navarro, 2013). In addition, they can give reviews regarding the service being provided by the hospitals and the doctors. These reviews will further help other people in having the prior idea about the hospital or doctor they are choosing. Medicare aims at changing the existing scenario of providing health care to the patients by offering a holistic approach to the health care under one roof. In the initial stage, the organization will operate in the Australian regions. Sydney will be chosen for the initial pilot project. Necessary feedback gathered from the customers during the pilot project will help to modify it according the market requirement and will expand it in other Australian regions afterwards (Goetsch & Davis, 2014). The healthcare industry in Australia is quite potential and emerging with increasing average spending in the healthcare. Medicare will implement a holistic approach in determining their strategies to gain more market foothold. The strategy will be the market penetration strategy. It will help to increase the market share by implementing extensive marketing activities and customer engagement schemes. The vision of the organization will be to be the leading company in providing online healthcare in the global market. Start ups naturally do not comprise of complex hierarchical structures. Thus, Medicare will implement flat and horizontal organizational structure. It will help to reduce the gap between the higher management and the employees. Further, the communication process in the internal organization will be enhanced between the higher and lower levels (Ashkenas et al., 2015). In the initial stage, the organizational structure will be divided in four main departments. One department will be responsible for the marketing and sales. They will look after the acquisitions of the client and marketing the services in the market. The second department will be responsible for financial aspect. They will look after the allocation of the financial resources in the organization and maintaining effective financial norms. The third department will look after the management of the human resources to maintain and enhance the performance of the employees (Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). The fourth department wil l be responsible for the software development. This department will look after the managing the portal effectively. The technological part will be looked after by them. These four departments will be headed by the separate department heads with all having independent decision making capability. Medicare will obviously face the external and internal environment forces that will have implications in their operations. PEST analysis will help to determine the various factors that will affect their performance. The first factor is political which refers to the government policies and stability in the region of operations (Galvaan, 2012). Political stability in Australia is favorable with having various government incentives to promote start ups. It will ease the process of gaining initial capital for operating. The next aspect is economical which refers to the condition of the economy in the particular region. Australia is a developed country and is having positive per capita expenses for health care which will help to increase the market share more rapidly. Being an industrially developed country, people will have more access to the internet and will have less personal time. Thus, it is an opportunity for Medicare to have extensive market penetration whose unique proposition is providing convenience (Barreto, 2012). The next aspect in the PEST analysis is social which refers to the social culture and structure in the society. Majority of the population in Australia is having access to mobile internet and most of them are comfortable in surfing and handling apps (Shiau & Luo, 2012). Thus, it will not be a difficult task for Medicare to market their services. Technology is the last aspect which refers to the advancement of technologies in the industry. Medicare is fully based on internet and technology. Thus, they have to be technologically advanced at all stages to stay ahead in the competition. The more advance and updated technologies they will use will help them in providing more convenience to their customers. Internal environment refers to the working environment of the employees (Korzynski, 2013). One of the key internal forces is the skill sets of the employees. The more diversified and updated skill set will be with the employees, the more will be their competitive advantage. Innovation i s another important criterion that will determine the effectiveness of the organization. The sector where Medicare is operating is fully innovation based. Thus, periodic innovation will help to stay ahead in the competition. According to the Robson risk management model, the first step is to perceiving the risk that can be associated with the organization. In the case of Medicare, the perceived risks can be the strategic risk. Strategic risk refers to the uncertainties regarding the change in the market perception (Frigo & Anderson, 2012). The preference pattern of the customer may change which will make the particular service irrelevant. On the other hand, the more superior service being introduced by the competitors may make the service provided by Medicare obsolete. Other perceived risk may be the financial risk that is quite common for any business organization. Operational risk may also be relevant in the management of Medicare. The next process is the assessment of the risk with having evaluated the level of impact in the organization (Covello & Merkhoher, 2013). Medicare will have contingency plans to reduce the impact of the risk in the business. Internal environment will be effectively managed i n order to reduce the probability of the risk and its impact. To enhance the performance of the organization, measures such as human resource management will be effectively implemented in order to enhance the productivity of the employees. Medicare will implement employee welfare schemes which will help to motivate the employees in providing effective service. Job rotation and employee empowerment will be promoted to reduce the monotony of the employees and enhancing their job satisfaction. Periodical skill development training will be provided to the employees in order to equip them with diversified abilities to face the business challenges (Ji et al., 2012). The key functions of Medicare will be acquiring more client or merchant which will be displayed from the portal. In this case, client or merchant refers to the hospitals and doctors who will subscribe with Medicare. It will enable to garner more traffic in the site which will help to attract more revenue. It is a revolving and interrelated process due to the reason that, more client acqui sition will help to attract more traffic and vice versa. The more traffic it will garner from the market will help to generate more positive word of mouth and buzz among the customers. It will enable them to increase their brand identity and image. This will further help in expanding the market in the global scenario. Thus, organizational performance will get enhanced with the enhancement of the basic functions of the organizations. More traffic in the site helps to garner more revenue from the market and eventually it will help to increase the resource allocation for their various activities. Thus, the customer service and convenience will get further enhanced. Thus, it can be concluded that in the era of internet boom and online market, Medicare will create a place of its own if being managed properly. Though, healthcare is emerging as one of the most profitable sector in the Australian region, but still the area where it is willing to operate is having much less amount of competitors. Thus, Medicare will have a huge untapped market to p enetrate. If designed and organized effectively, Medicare will change the entire scenario of providing health care in the global market. Evolution of Health Care Information Systems Essay - 1

Evolution of Health Care Information Systems - Essay Example This paper outlines that the use of health care information systems in United States has changed considerably during last twenty years. U.S. health organizations have modernized most of their health facilities in order to improve service delivery. A great deal of investments has been made in implementation of the information systems that are applied in clinical operations. In an effort to improve service delivery and decrease costs, health organizations have adopted computerized systems such as Electronic Medical Record systems. In the past, before the development of the EMR, health organizations used paper based record systems. At the time, half of the patient’s information was computerized and stored as computer printouts. From this study it is clear that the automated systems were used as primary source for analyzing patients’ information by the physicians or the clinicians. This contrasts sharply with the modern Electronic Medical Recording systems which are used as passive storage devices in many health organizations. Using this system enables physicians to access knowledge resources, reminders and alerts. Health professionals can use the system in decision making due to the fact that it enables them to access the decision support capabilities. Most of the health facilities present in the health centers could not be used to manage the patient health effectively. With the introduction of the electronic system, clinicians and physician have used the system to manage health of patients. The health facilities in the past could not provide the physician with comprehensive view of the patient’s health. Even though there is sharp contrast between health care facilities in the past and at the present, there exist some similarities. Medical records kept whichever the system is used, is very useful for documenting patient care.

Ethics in Practice - Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Ethics in Practice - - Case Study Example All expect one of the photos were accessible to other but only to a few friends. The paper is an attempt to get into the shoes of that reporter and help solve the ethical dilemma. The point, which is important here to note is that by not allowing that article to the published, one, would be upholding the principles of â€Å"liberty† and â€Å"freedom†. Analysis has indicated only a handful of prominent philosophers in the Western world that have not gone on to mention â€Å"liberty† as a value or virtue. Whether it is Karl Marx or John Stuart Mill, John Rawls or Kant, Nietzsche or Aristotle, they all believe that liberty and freedom is what makes the integral part of the human essence. In the absence of freedom and liberty, humans are very much similar to other animals. In fact, John Rawls, one of greatest philosophers of the 21st century has gone to elaborate the concept of liberty and its limits in a great manner, which says, â€Å"Liberty can only be restricted for liberty itself† (Corey, Corey & Callanan, pp. 64-67, 2010). Quite understandably, by posting those photos in the newspaper, Jane would be restricting the freedom of t hose teachers since those photos were not for the entire world but for a handful of friends. The only rational behind restricting the freedom of those teachers would be if their freedom had limiting someone else’s liberty of information, informed consent or others (Livingstone, pp. 85-89, 2009). However, this is not the case here. Their â€Å"lewd† photos are a matter of their personal life and not their public lives and whatever they do, after they are done teaching, should not be of any concern to others. Everyone has a right to live his or her private or personal lives with minimum interference from the outside (Gilliland, Steiner & Skarlicki, pp. 36-37, 2007). This article would be worth publishing and in fact, it would have become imperative to publish the articles if these photos

Digital Divide :: Essays Papers

Digital Divide The â€Å"Digital Define† is the distance between the people who have adequate access to technology and those who do not. As teachers, we have numerous avenues through which we can assist in narrowing the gap of the Digital Divide. Some suggestions are the following: 1. Gather teaching materials through sources such as: www.pbs.org/digitaldivide/about.html www.pbs.org/digitaldivide/learning.html www.siliconvallydigitaldivide.net www.ed.gov/free www.fcs.gov/resources.html 1-800-257-5126 2. Donate a computer, obtain a donated computer, or upgrade an obsolete one. Many organizations have been developed to assist in this task; a few are as follows: Share the Technology - www.sharetechnology.org Computers for Learning – www.computers.fed.gov NewDeal – www.newdealine.com Heaven – www.heavens.org 3. Keep informed about the most recent government initiatives, as well as what politicians and government officials have to say. A variety of Web sites can aid you in this undertaking; some are listed here: U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Technology – www.ed.gov/Technology Federal Communications Commission – www.fcc.gov.major.html Closing the Digital Divide – www.digitaldivide.gov The National Telecommunications and Information Administration – www.ntia.doc.gov/ntiahome/fttn99/contents.html The Digital Divide Network – www.digitaldividenetwork.org 4. Investigate the community access centers (CACs) in your area and spread the word about their availability. CACs include places such as libraries, community centers, schools, and other public-access locations. 5. Learn about model initiatives – successful models. A few projects include: The Digital Divide Project – www.washington.edu/wto/digital/resources/html NetDay – www.netday.org Alliance for Community Technology – www.communitytechnology.org The Foundry – www.thefoundry.org The Village Foundation – www.villagefoundation.org/PROGRAMS/pathways/technology/index.html PowerUP: Bridging the Digital Divide – www.powerup.org The Maine Laptop Program Lightspan, Inc. – www.lightspan.com Plugged In – www.pluggedin.org Neighborhood Network – www.hud.gov/nnwnnwindex.html 6. Explore opportunities for corporate support. A good place to start is www.wested.org/tie/grant.html#corporate. This site has a list of corporate and foundation funding sources and other grant related resources. The model initiative I chose to investigate is NetDay. NetDay is a project connecting students and their teachers in under-served communities with the necessary resources to facilitate learning through education technology. From this site, NetDay Compass is accessible. NetDay Compass is a teachers guide to educational technology resources. There are sections on developing technology plans, technology infrastructure, grant and funding, classroom support, and model high tech schools. Here teachers will find the information they need to include technology in education and narrow the gap of the digital divide. In the three years I have been teaching in Louisiana, I have seen numerous incidents of digital divide. However, one particular incident stands out in my mind the most. Last year, I had a Financial Math class made up of mostly juniors and seniors.

Theories on Criminal Behavior

There are many theories that provide an explanation of criminal behavior. According to some theories, delinquent behavior is innate in an individual. Other theories say that crime is influenced by environmental, economic, and psychological aspects (University of North Texas, nd). Biological Theories According to the biological theories, criminals have a different physiological makeup from non-criminals. Their biological inferiority is what pushes them to resort to criminal activities. There had been multiple studies that attempts to find out if criminality is hereditary through analysis of family trees, identical and fraternal twins, statistics, and adopted children. However, these approaches have proved futile because they cannot distinguish hereditary from environmental influences (University of North Texas, nd). Contemporary researches, on the other hand, has discovered a wide array of biological factors that have direct or indirect connection with criminal or delinquent activities .Among them are lack of chemicals, minerals, and vitamins in the food they eat, sugar and carbohydrates-rich food, and hypoglycemia. Exposure to radiation, dysfunctions in the brain, and swallowing of food dyes and lead also play an important role in criminal behaviors. Likewise, criminal acts have something to do with hormonal abnormalities, particularly those that are connected with testosterone (the male sex hormone) and progesterone and estrogen (the sex hormones related to female). By injecting estrogen to male sex offenders would minimize their sexual drives(University of North Texas, nd).In addition, biological theorists likewise believe that the interplay of biological, environmental and social conditions can have an effect on criminal behavior. The genetic makeup of the criminal gives them a predisposition to act in a certain manner. The environmental and social conditions determines the actual behavior as well as the definition of that act(University of North Texas, nd). P sychological Theories The belief that criminal behavior is caused by low intelligence gained ground in the United States. In order to prove this view, a study was conducted in 1931 and reached a zero correlation between the intelligence of an individual and criminal behavior(University of North Texas, nd). According to Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, criminal behaviors are associated with psychopaths or those who have internal problems that have been unresolved. Psychopaths are people who are rules by senseless guilt, subjective conscience, and no do not know how to distinguish right from wrong. In general, they find it hard to establish relationships with other people and do not know how to be emphatic(University of North Texas, nd).Sociological TheoriesAccording to sociologists, how people behave is determined by the social group as well as the social structure. The conditions of their society may cause them to commit crimes and delinquency(University of North Texas, nd).Sub-cultural Theory of DelinquencyIn the 1920s, the Chicago School, composed of sociologists, attempted to discover the connection between the crime rate of a community and its characteristics. According to this theory, social disorganization can take place in a neighborhood where the rate of delinquency is high.Social disorganization takes place when:1) there is absence of delinquency control;2) the criminal behavior is most of the time with the consent of parents as well as the community;3) the opportunity for delinquency presents itself; 4) there is minimal encouragement, training, or possibility for legal employment(University of North Texas, nd).Anomie TheoryThis theory was proposed by Robert Merton in 1938. Anomie explains the major difference between the cultural objectives and social structure of the United States. People experience strain as a result of their limited access to legal means of achieving wealth. In order to cope up with this inadequacy, people accumulate we alth through illegal methods as well as through conformity. Other forms of adaptation, according to the anomie theory, include ritualism, wherein the individual does not pursue the wealth actively, and rebellion, where the individual does not accept both the goal of the wealth as well as the legal means of obtaining it(University of North Texas, nd).Differential AssociationThis theory, introduced by Edwin Sutherland, is one of the major beliefs that explains the causes of criminal behavior.According to Sutherland, criminal behavior takes place because the delinquent individual has been exposed to criminal elements and isolated from anti-criminal patterns(University of North Texas, nd).Social Learning TheoryAccording to the principles of learning theory, the best way to approach criminality is to implement policies that would effectively punish criminals. Sadly, this is not being implemented in the United States. At present, the delinquent individual is usually not incarcerated and r eturned to the same community where they have been exposed to criminal behavior.Likewise, the method of punishment lacks consistency and is not immediately implemented. Alternative or prosocial behaviors is not rewarded with positive reinforcement(University of North Texas, nd).Social Control TheoryThe social control theory does not attempt to uncover the reasons why criminal behavior is committed but rather focuses on why people conform and accept these behaviors(University of North Texas, nd). Travis Hirschi, in his 1969 book Causes of Delinquency, provides a comprehensive presentation of contemporary social control theory. In his book, Hirschi concluded that delinquent behavior is likely unless the offender is exposed in a society that is characterized by attachment to other people, commitment to traditional means of action, involvement in usual activities, and concurrence to moral order and law(University of North Texas, nd). Moreover, Hirschi explained that the leading cause of delinquency is ineffective child rearing, which results to individuals with low self-control(University of North Texas, nd).Labeling TheoryThis theory places emphasis on the criminalization process itself as the reason for some crimes. The criminalization process refers to the definition of criminals and delinquent behavior. According to the labeling theory, the first time a person commits a delinquent act and gets punished by the criminal system, they are already viewed as a criminal and it eventually becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy(University of North Texas, nd).Conflict TheoryThis theory delves on the struggle between rich and poor, management and employees, majority and minority group. According to the conflict theory, society involves conflicts between rival interest groups and that the law and justice system functions in order to control subordinate groups.Crime results from the lack of power(University of North Texas, nd).Radical/Marxist TheoryAccording to this theory, capi talism demands competition of people in order to gain material wealth. Because of the uneven distribution of wealth, people have taken advantage of people who are less powerful than them as they accumulate wealth(University of North Texas, nd). According to the radical theory, criminal behavior is caused by what Marx calls class struggle (University of North Texas, nd).Real Life Cases of Criminal Behavior For a period of two years, FBI Special Agent Robert Hazelwood and Janet Warren from the University of Virginia’s Institute of Psychiatry and Law conducted interviews of 41 men who were convicted for the rape of 837 victims. Based on the interviews, 55-61% of the criminals committed premeditated rape during the first, middle, and final act. 15 – 22% of the criminals said that their acts were results of their impulse while 22 – 24% said that the opportunity to rape presented itself(Hazelwood & Warren, 1990).According to Janet Warren from the University of Virgini a, there are methods of sexual attacks on women. The first one is called the ‘con’ approach. In this method, the rapist openly talks to their victims and asks if they can do anything to help them. As soon as the victim is within their control, that is the time they perpetrate their evil plans. This was the case used by one of the interviewed rapists named John, who was responsible for raping 20 victims(Hazelwood & Warren, 1990). The second method used by rapist is the ‘blitz. Here the rapist physically assaults their victims by using chemicals or gases. Most of the times, however, they use their strength to overpower the woman. This was the case of 28 year-old Phil, who raped one of his victims in a vehicle(Hazelwood & Warren, 1990). Finally, the third method is the ‘surprise. ’ In this approach, the rapist pre-selects their would-be victim. The physical assault is perpetrated by the offender waiting for the woman. Weapons, such as guns or knives, as w ell as threats are involved in the surprise approach. 24-year old Sam chooses his victims by observing her patterns. He was able to rape 20 victims before he was caught(Hazelwood & Warren, 1990).ConclusionThere are many theories that explain the reasons why people resort to criminal behaviors. The causes of criminality may be psychological, social, or biological.ReferencesExplaining Crime. University of North Texas. Examples of Post Modernism in Play and Worker Drone Essay

In any situation foreign to the character, anything and everything will be done to try to make sense of ones surroundings. The importance of identifying the type of the movies shown in â€Å"Worker Drone† by Raju, S. (2010) and â€Å"Play† by Kaplan and Zimmerman (2010) are vital to the understanding of not only the plot, but also the common themes presented. For example, common themes in both movies were was the sense of paranoia, a showcase of intertextuality and an ambiguous endings. All three common themes make it clear that these movies are in fact postmodern films, despite the fact that there were also a few common themes also found supporting a modernist and existentialist sense. There were ambiguous ending in both filmsIn both films, there were clear ambiguous endings, which makes them postmodernis a large indicator of a postmodern film. For example, the audience also does not know what how the ending was in the movie â€Å"Play† movie â€Å"Play† ends, and leaves them asking questions such as to who was the little boy and does the female end up tell anyone else what she saw in the ending? In â€Å"The Worker Drone† the audience never finds out if the war had ended or even if Paul has actually told anyone else the truth. These films display ambiguous endings and leave the audience wondering as to what exactly happened, and allows them to create their own version of the ending in their own heads. This common theme displays a postmodern type of storytelling in both â€Å"The Worker Drone† and â€Å"Play†. Another key postmodern theme that I believe was most apparent was the use of intertexting themes in both â€Å"The Worker Drone† and â€Å"Play†. An example of such was used during â€Å"Play† when the story is actually set inside a videogame in which the characters play as characters inside of the game cartages. Also, Wwhile in â€Å"The Worker Drone† this theme is shown with the use of the â€Å"Planet Dogstar† promo commercial that is played as a video inside of a movie. These examples of intertexting are very apparent in both films and represents another aspect of postmodern themes. Lastly, as related to the previous paragraph, most specifically the movie â€Å"Play†, the strange world in which these characters live in create a sense of paranoia and has them begin to question their reality. As mentioned, in the movie â€Å"Play† these characters find themselves in a strange video game world in which they are unsure of who they even are (eg. â€Å"Who am I? Where am I?†). Meanwhile, in â€Å"The Worker Drone† the main characters have developed paranoia in which they believe they are being monitored to the point in which they have nanochips implanted in their brains. In conclusion, both â€Å"The Worker Drone† and â€Å"Play† presented common themes showcasing a postmodern view such as intertexting, ambiguous endings and paranoia. These themes stood out the most in my opinion and made these stories postmodern in my opinion. Task 1, Topic 2: Two Examples of Post modernism FINAL COPY In any situation foreign to the character, anything and everything will be done to try to make sense of ones surroundings. When was the movie made? A. First in 1925 but again in 2013. Q. What is the main setting of the movie? (Time and place) A. Between West Egg and New York in the early 1900s after a war. Q. Who are the main characters? Which one is the protagonist? Which one is the antagonist? (Who are they, describe them briefly). A. Daisy : Gatsby loves her. He met her five years ago but didn’t marry her, now she is married with someone else and Gatsby wants to get back with her. Nick : The cousin of Daisy. Is used by Gatsby to connect with Daisy, and he is the one narrating the story. Jordon: Has a connection between Nick, Tom and Gatsby, and is a â€Å"side character† Protagonist: He is â€Å"Jay Gatsby†. His character is shown as the film progresses, and he is a mysterious man that throws parties every Saturday for what is later revealed to impress Daisy. He is a con man and has made money off of corruption. Antagonist: Tom (Daisy’s husband) is the antagonist in the film. He is originally just loving to his wife, but upon realizing Gatsbys intensions, plans to Gatsbys death Q. What is the essence of the problem or conflict that lies at the heart of this movie? A. Gatsby was unable to marry Daisy five years prior as he was too poor, and is now trying to win her back now that he is rich. The essence of the problem is also the decision by Daisy as to who she wants to spend the rest of her life with (Gatsby or her husband, Tom) Q. How are the attitudes and perspectives on life from that era reflected in the film? A. The language is very clearly an older, more British form of English with many British phrases presented (â€Å"Old Chap†). On top of that, the clothing, buildings, and cars are clearly old fashioned and dates back to the early 1900’s. Lastly, there is clearly a cultural shift between the main characters, and the lesser â€Å"poorer† peoples. This is clear by the lack of disregard to colored and underprivileged peoples in the early 1900’s Q. How is the story helped by camera angles? A. There are close shots during emotional scenes in them such as the only time when Gatsby was angry and when he was shot dead as well. There are shots with Dutch/angle to show confusion during the party scene when Nick met Gatsby for the first time. And when Tom’s lover, was struck by the car that was being driven by Daisy. There were also many long shots from above  to show wider detail like when there is a shot taken of the block/city. Q. How is the story helped by music? Provide several specific examples. A. The music was really relative to the scenes, and clearly emphasized the point playing. For example, there was soothing music during intimate scenes, and in contrast there was loud, fast paced music playing during the party scenes. Also, there was a clear difference in genre of music based on the ethnicity shown. For example more classical music was played during scenes with Daisy’s husband, and hip-hop during scenes with African Americans. Q. How is the story helped by costumes? A. Every scene costumes played a major role on portraying the setting, wither it be representing rich from poor, casual to formal, or night to day, as well as portraying the time this film was set in. The costumes were clearly early 1900s and was showcased by women wearing full dresses with hats, as well as Gatsby even holding a cane for show. An example of formal to casual is showcased by the Butlers wearing tuxedos in comparison to causal night clothes worn by Gatsby and other characters. Q. What is the overarching theme of the movie? Defend your choice. A. This film has one of the clearest themes I’ve even noticed, and it’s that wealth can’t buy you happiness. This is shown by the fact that Gatsby was able to throw rich extravagant parties, yet was unhappy because he was not with Daisy. Eventually he would actually die as a result of trying to get Daisy’s love back to marry him. Simply put, money cannot buy happiness Q. How do these production choices (camera angles, music, costumes) contribute to the overarching feeling that the movie is existentialist, modernist, or postmodernist? Choose one of these three styles and show how production choices helped to illuminate the literary style of the film. A. As mentioned previously, camera angles, music and costumes played a major role in the film. These helped present a Modernist style of movie by presenting costumes in the early 1900s sense. Around this time modernism began to grow, and you can tell by the modernist touches to the clothing. The music along with the costumes presents the Flappers ideology and really presented the modernist feel. Q. How is this like the poems, songs, or stories you have read in this unit? A. I found this movie had a variety of elements in it showcasing not only modernist views, but also existentialist and postmodernist ideas. Now of course these views have been presented in other poems, songs and stories throughout this unit, but it is the first time that all these elements are so clearly together. For example, modernist elements were found in the references to WW1 and Oxford U, while postmodernist elements were showcased in paranoia and suspension of other characters. In conclusion, I find this movie to have been a great blending of all themes, but having modernist as the center point idea. Q. How is this film different from everything else that you have read, heard, etc., in this unit? Make two specific connections. A. I found this film showcased many examples of several elements showcased in this unit (modernist, postmodern, existentialist, etc.). This made it more of an opinion choice based off the evidence as to what type of film was showcased. I did find this film to be much more enjoyable than the other films shown (practically because I knew about the story prior to) and made this film much more enjoyable/realistic to watch. Q. Is this movie mostly existentialist in outlook or mostly modernist in outlook or mostly postmodernist in its style? Why do you think that? A. I believe the movie was modernist for the most part because it had many of the elements required and did not have many postmodernist or existentialist elements throughout. Elements such as alliteration, such as the term â€Å"Old sport† were used for multiple reasons throughout the movie, which showcases a modernist form. Allusions/references were also very apparent, in such forms as references to WW1, Oxford U, etc. The theme of juxtaposition was shown as well when Daisy was deciding who to spend her life with. Task 3: Script The movie had many modern elements and concepts to it, and by adding the following monologue I hope to present the fact that it is such by using a  few theatrical devises used from that era (eg. â€Å"Strong visual images, Free-form poetry†). This scene begins the story as a reflection of the stories events told by Mr. Gatsby before the story its self is presented in full. â€Å"She was unique. A lovely girl for whom I loved from when I laid my eyes first upon her. You see, I was a fool. Her exquisiteness was so mind-blowing, so much in such that I became too nervous to make my presence available to her. We first met in Louisville in 1917, and we fell madly in love. Time changed, we grew apart. Yet here I found myself in the same country, same city and almost the same island yet I was a fool and I stayed reclusive.† â€Å"I don’t know how long it may have been, in fact I might not have ever reacquainted with her had it not been for a swell lad that moved next door named Nick. You see, every Saturday. Over and over again. Week after week. With my incredible wealth I hosted the grandest, most exciting parties that this Grand Island have ever seen, hoping, just hoping that this golden girl would show up.† â€Å"Today my heart is aching For a woman that’s far away I would give anything to hold him And any ransom I would pay† Once finished speaking, Mr. Gatsby finishes typing up what he’s said in story form. Proceeds to the crumple up the paper and throw it in the trash bin. Modified Poem from: http://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poems/love/long-distance/#ixzz3TZLUMIlw

Essay on The Scarlet Letter Trial Notes

Essay on The Scarlet Letter Trial Notes Essay on The Scarlet Letter Trial Notes Scarlett Letter Trial Notes I had to watch myself slowly transform into someone I am not. The isolation given to me by the society I lived in forced me to dwell in my sins which eventually began taking a toll on my mentality and even my physical being. I had a determination to stand alone despite the opinion of society. My morals were a bigger concern to me that the thoughts of the judgmental people who surrounded me. I completely lacked any adult companionship throughout my life. The only comfort outside of my home I had was the feeling when a stranger in town didn’t comment on my past or the â€Å"A† placed on my breast. I had nothing but the strength of spirit to sustain me. One thing I have always been concerned with is trust I possess in myself and the knowledge that I am as honest as I possibly can be. Above all things, I was honest. I was not only honest to the entire public, but I was honest with myself. Even in my sham of a marriage, Chillingworth knew that I was frank with him. I felt no love, nor faked any. My life is public repentance. Even after years of social alienation I began to change again, mentally. I no long wallowed in self pity. I began offering comfort to the poor, the sick, and the broken. When the governor was dying, I was at his side. Despite the fact he never did anything to deserve my comfort. I had no friend, no companion, not one foot crossed the doorstep of my cottage. I had Pearl to raise and she produced a great number of difficulties. But in my solitude, I had a great deal of time to think. My shame in the face of public opinion, her loneliness and suffering, and her quiet acceptance of her position

Article summary of Roschach Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Article summary of Roschach - Essay Example The findings of over 125 meta-analysis and 800 multimethod assessment studies have shown that psychological assessment instruments such as the Rorschach perform as effectively as any instrument used in the entire health services industry such as â€Å"electrocardiograms, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), dental radiographs, Papanicolaou (Pap) smears, positron emission tomography (PET) scans, and serum cholesterol level testing†. This conclusion was arrived at after analyzing a comprehensive set of 144 validity coefficients for psychological and medical tests. The results of these tests were comparable to those obtained for finding the validity of intelligence scales and the Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Hence the research scholars unanimously concur on the validity of the Rorschach, stating that they find no reason why this instrument should be criticized. Moreover, when one considers the contexts in which the Rorschach is usually used, then most criticisms directed against it don’t hold good. Hence conditional validity is a key area of research going forward.

Advantages and disadvantages of team and individual teaching Article

Advantages and disadvantages of team and individual teaching - Article Example Teaching in a team actually means a group of teachers, decisively working with each other on regular basis to facilitate students in groups in order to acquire knowledge about various subjects. The instructors in team teaching cooperate with one another and make use of the particular skills and abilities of each instructor. This approach of teaching boosts up the student-teacher interaction, allowing both of them to evaluate each other. Contradictory to individual teaching, the goals are set by the consensus of team members and the methods and strategies of teaching are also set by the line of reasoning among the group members, helping to bring about the best of it. (Judson T Shaplin; Henry F Olds, 1964) The students may learn more profoundly by team teaching approach as more than one experts of the very topic defines it with a different approach. It helps to understand the topic from various frames of references. This approach helps to get rid of students-teacher personality problems. Presence of another team mate abates the yoke of work from the teachers and motivates them more towards their profession. Team working distributes the responsibility, encourages creativity, and brings effectiveness in teaching. (Medill Bair; Richard G Woodward, 1964) However, sometimes this approach is not adapted by the experts. Since, groups are not every time as good as we assume them to be. Often, teachers do not prefer to teach in teams, due to different reasons.

American Transition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

American Transition - Essay Example The problem was that the Radical Republicans pay more attention to the rearrangement of Southern institutions rather than to "the elevation of the ex-slave". Only some of them realized that slavery was not able "to train the ex-slave for participation in a free competitive society, as most of them assumed that the termination of slavery meant the end of their problems (Burns 12). They believed that blacks could immediately enter into community life on an equal footing with other citizens". Anyway ex-slaves appeared empty handed before the new kind of world. They had not yet been granted their civil rights. "At the same time, they were no longer covered by property rights. Therefore they were even more vulnerable to physical intimidation than before" (Burns 7). Seemingly among the achievements of Reconstruction was obviously granting minimum of political and civil rights to the ex-slave, though white supremacy supporters were stubborn in their desire to ruin this advance. In the situations when it was impossible to use frightening and terror, ex-slaves were under the ruthless economic oppression by landowners and merchants. Ex-slaves were little by little loosing their influence during voting. Although it all this was obvious the Northern Radical Republicans seemed to be tired of the everlasting fight for protecting ex-slaves. Moreover the Northern whites supported the Southern race bigotry. Thus the North begun to give preference to peace rather than justice. "Industrialists were expanding their businesses rapidly, and they wanted the South to be pacified, so that it would be a safe area for investment and expansion. If this meant returning power to white conservatives, they were willing to pay the price" (Burns 11). The election of presi dent in 1876 outgrew into mess. The South agreed to uphold Republican Hayes only in the case of withdrawing the troops and renewing home rule. Thus having become President B. Hayes claimed that if the Southern whites were let alone, they would be to handle ex-slaves conscientiously. "Hayes seemed unaware that men could be educated, civilized, and claim to be Christians while at the same time behaving as bigots and racists" (Burns 14). In order to content the voracious North and the Hayes interred the residues of Reconstruction. At the end of his term Southern white conservatives absolutely retook earlier lost positions. From the point of view of American transition let's also consider an issue of technical changes which accelerated the development of the United States in the late 19th century. These changes included "a wave of inventions bringing new interlocking means of transportation, new power sources, new materials, mass production of consumer goods, advances in industrial chemistry, and innovative modes of production" (Burns 42). Besides this revolution resulted in various economic and social changes in the USA like new modes of management and organizational forms. Inventor-entrepreneurs, and among them was Thomas Edison, Elmer Sperry, Lee De Forrest, formed a direction of inventive activity which initiated the Second Industrial Revolution. In 1896 a writer in the Scientific American referring to the remarkable outpouring of U.S. patents since the Civil War, exuberantly insisted that his was "an epoch of invention and progress unique in the history of the world" (Burns 39).

History and Types of Regiment Units

History and Types of Regiment Units At first, there is the MOD (Ministry of Defence) which is a British department in the government that is responsible the defence policy set by the majesty government and the British armed forces. The Ministry of Defence mainly objectives are to defend the UK of Great Britain and North Ireland and to strengthen them with stability and peace. The MOD also protects independence security of interest of the United Kingdom whether is in the UK or out of the UK. Michael Fallon is currently the minister that is responsible of the Ministry of Defence. Then seconded in line is the 1st Division which is a large military unit with normally around 15-20 thousand soldiers. In most armies, a division is usually separated between brigades or regiments. The division is big, but they also can be small a combined armed unit that can do independent operations. The 1st Division is at the top of the armed divisions in the United Kingdom and are 7th in the world, which are also in charge of the roles they give to the soldiers to set out their authority. The division is a defensive army that serves for Britain resilience and fights with a few brigades and other armies from other countries. Of course, a major-general is in charge of the 1st Division but is also aided by three other Brigades such as the 4th Mechanized Brigade (The Black Rats), the 20th Armoured Brigade (The Iron Fist), and the 7th Armoured Brigade (Desert Rats). Brigades are major tactical military units that are usually made up of 3-6 battalions. Brigades are equal to a large unit of regiments, with 2 more brigades it would then make up a division. Brigades are normally in infantries or armoured units. The 4th Mechanized Brigade is based in Yorkshire and does mostly operational missions within the north-east of England. They have 2 forces under its command which are the Army Cadet Force and the Combined Cadet Force. The 4th Mechanized Brigade is basically under the command of the 1st Division to train the 18 forces they have under their command but the one who is in charge of the Black rats is Brigadier Charlie Hebert who is a one-star officer. Sir Herbert is then responsible to retain the conduct and discipline of his armoured military sized unit. However as for the 20th Armoured brigade is different from the black rats, for starters even though they are a British army they are based in Germany but are looking to relocate their headquarters back to the United Kingdom in a few years to come. This brigade had its most recent operation in Iraq, and is not back in Germany but is aiding the Afghanistan army as for now. From this The Iron Fist is an army that is not only part of the 1st Division but also from the 3rd Division who are also titled The Iron Division. This Division only has 3 separate brigades, Infantry Brigade and only one Logistic Brigade; all of the 3 brigades are based in the United Kingdom. The Brigadier who is responsible for the black rats is Brigadier Mike Elviss. The 7th Armoured Brigade also called the Desert Rats and are quite similar with The Iron Fist even though the 7th Armoured Brigade were renamed into the 7th Infantry Brigade but still have the name the Desert Rats as its a nickname for the Brigade. For some reason their motto/shout out is Floreat jerboa which means in English; in the English translation Let the Desert Rats flourish. Again they have brigadier that is in command of this brigade and the other 49 brigades that has been combined with the original o be named the 7th Infantry Brigade. Regiments are a military unit that varies their role and size depending on their country and their armed service who have a smaller size of units that are then called a battalion. A battalion is also a military unit that consist of 300-800 soldiers. Battalions are mostly commanded by a lieutenant colonel. Even though a battalion is one small military organization they are still capable of independent operations that are limited. The lowest level someone could get in a battalion unit is either an executive officer or the support and service unit. The term company in the armed forces is used only when a private military made out of 4-10 soldiers are providing armed combat. Private Military Companys like to call their staff as security contractors or private contractors. Private military companies also like to call their business generally as the Circuit which hires mostly mercenaries and bodyguards.

Christianity is the True Humanism :: Religion Religious Essays

Christianity is the True Humanism Recently, I heard a shocking story about young boy who was raised in a coffin. Having been abandoned by his mom and dad, the child’s dysfunctional grandparents grudgingly assumed the task of raising him. For some bizarre reason, they kept him confined in a coffin, and only let him out to eat and go to the bathroom. Once the authorities rescued him, they discovered that the little fellow had no idea that there was any other way to exist. He thought all children were raised in coffins. To him that was reality. His life was dehumanizing. He did not know it. Similarly, many of us today do not realize just how dehumanizing our own society actually is. Granted, we don’t live in coffins, but we do live in a deadly culture that increasingly undermines the dignity of human life. The corruption of sexuality, the dissolution of marriage, the breakdown of the family, pornography, abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, rampant consumerism, political malfeasance, corporate scandal, ecclesiastical betrayal, excessive individualism, the obsession with technology and biotechnology, and the desecration of the environment are just a few of the powerful forces that are chipping away day by day at what it means to be human. Ironically, most people have no idea that there is any other way to exist. Most simply assume that this is just the way life is. Few, if any, are asking whether or not we are witnessing the abolition of man. Is there any vision of life that can help us realize that we are living in the coffin of a lethal, dehumanizing culture and show us a better way? A Christian worldview answers affirmatively with a resounding â€Å"Yes!† In fact, Christianity is the â€Å"true humanism† which delivers us from the pit of degradation and lifts us up to the peak of nobility and respect. In all creation, we human beings alone are the image and likeness of God. We can reflect, love, create, and most importantly, worship the One whose image we bear. God has given us stewardship over creation to develop a rich and godly culture that benefits others and honors God. Art and science, work and play, marriage and family, church and state are our gifts and tasks. God has crowned us with glory and majesty (Psalm 8: 5). By redemption, Jesus Christ has reconciled us to God from whom we were estranged because of sin.

Family: Television and Shooting Dad Essay

Family, they are there for you no matter what. They love you no matter what your views, but is there anything that is more important then family? In the two essays ; Shooting Dad and TV: The Plug-In Drug, both show what being a family is like for different people. Each essay shows pathos, ethos, and cause and effect in both different and similar ways. TV: The Plug-In Drug, by Marie Winn, is about televisions â€Å"taking over† quality family time. Winn uses pathos by talking to different types of people who come from different types of families; this way you get to hear from other people how the television is taking away from precious memory making. Trying to touch each of our emotional sides, although you might not start crying, Winn is able to talk to people and get information about families and the time they spend with each other versus the time in front of the television. Hear what this woman had to say about the television: â€Å"We were in the midst of a full-scale War. Every day was a new battle and every program was major skirmish†¦We have agreed on 2? hours of TV a day (with dinner gobbled up in between) and two half-hour shows between 7 and 8:30 which enables the grown-ups to eat in peace†¦Ã¢â‚¬ How many of us actually do this? Just like in Shooting Dad, by Sarah Vowell, average people try to use something else to cover up the feelings they have about something. Although Vowell shows a more clear side to pathos she does not get into as much detail, nor is her essay based on facts, which people tend to believe or rely on more then stories. Vowell uses a childhood story to explain to us how never giving interest to something can lead to being over-looked by the people you care about. One line in this essay that shows a lot of emotion is: â€Å"My dad says that when he dies he wants my mom, sister, and me to drag the cannon to the top of the Gravellies on opening day of hunting season. Looking off at Sphinx Mountain put his ashes in a little paper bag, then place the bag in the cannon. Aim the cannon high into the sky, making sure he does not take anyone else with him, just so he can take his last hunting trip on opening morning. Not only would this be hard for the family to hear their father say, it would also be hard to accomplish. This is very emotional and to some of us it is also quite personal. When it comes to being personal, Winn has an amazing way of sharing each comment with us. The one that touched me the most was from a woman who lived not far from here in Chicago, she said: â€Å"As a child I had millions of relatives around- my parents both come from relatively large families. My father had nine brothers and sister. And so every holiday there was this great swoop-down of aunts, uncles, and millions of cousins. I just remember how wonderful it used to be. The cousins would come and everyone would play and ultimately, after dinner, all the women would be in the front of the house, drinking coffee and talking, all the men would be in the back of the house, drinking and smoking, and all the kids would be all over the place, playing hide and seek. Christmas time was particularly nice because everyone always brought all their toys and games. Our house had a couple of rooms with go-through closets, so there were always kids running in a great circle route. I remember it was just wonderful. And then all the sudden one year I remember becoming suddenly aware of how different everything had become. The kids were no longer playing Monopoly or Clue or the other games we used to play together. It was because we had a television set which had been turned on for a football fame. All of that socializing that had gone on preciously had ended. Now everyone was sitting in front of the television set, on a holiday, at a family party! I remember being stunned by how awful that was. Somehow the television had become more attractive. † Do you remember those Christmases? Not until I read this essay did I clearly understand how the television is overpowering the family time we spend together now. The way Winn is able to use a story that anyone can relate to is so awesome and it makes the essay even more personal. Shooting Dad on the other hand is not people’s comments or stories, it is like the authors biography. Shooting Dad tells about Vowell and her father, how they fight all the time and rarely agree on anything. The reason I find this part so personal is my dad and I disagree on a lot and rarely agree on anything just like in the story. Sarah Vowell is able to take a personal story and easily make the reader feel like they are in her shoes. While both TV: The Plug-In Drug and Shooting Dad show pathos and ethos in similar and different ways, each one shows cause and effect the same. TV: The Plug-In Drug shows that is you watch television all the time you have no time for family. It also shows that television can take away from something or someone really special. Shooting Dad shows a similar scene although it has nothing to do with a television it still shows how something can â€Å"get in the way† of being a family. The father in this story is all about ammunition, but the daughter could care less; she would rather read a book or make a science project. When the daughter showed interest in her fathers completion of a cannon, she was amazed and they went out together to shoot it. Never would this have happened if the daughter did not try. Shooting Dad and TV: The Plug-In Drug both tell a story that liking something so unimportant so much that is takes away from what really matters. Shooting Dad and TV: The Plug-In Drug are two similar stories, told in different ways. Vowell, author of Shooting Dad, tries to use more of a personal story to help the reader better understand how average Americans let insignificant things get in the way of a family. TV: The Plug-In Drug on the other hand uses facts and opinion both to help the reader. In using other people’s opinions, the author, Marie Winn, is able to take different stories and create a story of her own that expresses everything and more about a television overpowering a families time spent together. So what matters to you? Is it your television, latest invention, new CD, what means so much to you that your family cannot come first? If you say â€Å"family means more to me than anything† or â€Å" my family always comes first,† remember the last time you were watching television or reading a book and someone called you name. Your response was probably, â€Å" Hang on just a minute, wait until the commercial comes on,† like the average American, we all tend to put something off and tell the person bugging us during our favorite television show to wait, like what they had to say was not important. Before you finish reading this essay, I am going to ask you one more time: Is there anything more important than family?
